I Love Caulk

Review summaries

The tube-by-tube reviews

Seventeen caulks and sealants worth knowing: what each one is great at, where it lets people down, and which to put in your cart for the job in front of you.

How we review

These are editorial summaries, not lab tests. Each one pulls together the manufacturer's own specs and the experience widely reported by pros and DIYers, then judges the tube against the job it was made for. A 4.5 for a roof sealant means it's excellent on a roof, not that you should put it around your tub. No brand pays us, we don't use affiliate links, and product names and formulas change, so read the tube before you buy.

Seal of Approval picks

If you only read one thing on this page: the tube we'd grab for each job.

Kitchen, bath & trim

The tubes that live under the sink and in the painter's bucket.

Siliconized acrylic latex

DAP Alex Plus

Acrylic Latex Caulk Plus Silicone

4.5 out of 5

The painter's default for a reason: cheap, easy, and invisible under a coat of paint.

Best for
Baseboards, crown molding, door and window casings, drywall-to-trim gaps, anything you'll paint.
Skip it if
The joint sits in water (tubs, showers, sink rims) or moves a lot with the seasons.
Paintable?
Yes, quickly
Wet areas?
Splashes only
Where
Interior; light-duty exterior
Cleanup
Water, while it's wet
Timing
DAP advertises paint-ready times of about half an hour. Deep beads take longer; check the tube.

What people love

  • Easy to gun and tool, even for first-timers
  • Soap-and-water cleanup
  • Takes paint without drama
  • Inexpensive and on every shelf

Common gripes

  • Shrinks in deep gaps, so big joints can need a second pass
  • Can crack in joints that move a lot
  • Not the right tube for wet zones, even though it handles humidity

100% silicone

GE Silicone 2 Kitchen & Bath

Sold lately as GE Advanced Silicone 2

4.5 out of 5

The tub-and-shower default. Truly waterproof, stays flexible, and resists mildew.

Best for
Tub-to-tile and shower pan joints, sink rims, backsplash-to-counter seams, anywhere water stands.
Skip it if
You plan to paint it, or the old bead left silicone residue you won't clean off.
Paintable?
No
Wet areas?
Yes
Where
Interior (GE sells window-and-door versions for outside)
Cleanup
Dry rag or mineral spirits before it cures; cured silicone has to be cut and scraped off
Timing
GE advertises fast water-ready times on its kitchen and bath formulas. A full day before a long hot shower is the safe bet.

What people love

  • Genuinely waterproof
  • Stays flexible for years
  • Mildew-resistant formula
  • White and clear versions are easy to find

Common gripes

  • Harder to tool neatly than latex; practice on cardboard
  • Can't be painted
  • Won't bond to old silicone residue, so prep is everything

100% silicone

Gorilla 100% Silicone

Silicone sealant in clear and white; cartridges and squeeze tubes

4.0 out of 5

Dependable all-purpose silicone, and a good pick when you want a clear bead.

Best for
Glass, metal, tile, fixtures, windows, and small waterproof seams indoors or out.
Skip it if
The surface will be painted, or you need a color match to painted trim.
Paintable?
No
Wet areas?
Yes
Where
Interior and exterior
Cleanup
Dry rag or mineral spirits before it cures
Timing
Skins within minutes. Give it about a day before water, longer for thick beads; check the tube.

What people love

  • Clear bead stays clear
  • Squeeze tubes are handy for small jobs
  • Stays flexible outdoors

Common gripes

  • Messy to tool, like every silicone
  • Clear shows every gap and fingerprint
  • Cured residue is stubborn to remove later

Sanded siliconized acrylic

Polyblend Sanded Tile Caulk

Custom Building Products sanded ceramic tile caulk

4.0 out of 5

When matching your sanded grout matters more than maximum flexibility.

Best for
Inside corners and change-of-plane joints in tile, where you want the caulk to look like the grout.
Skip it if
The joint moves a lot, or it's the tub line that sits in water every day (silicone lasts longer there).
Paintable?
Possible, rarely done
Wet areas?
Showers, after a full cure
Where
Interior
Cleanup
Water, while it's wet
Timing
Needs a longer cure than silicone before a shower soaks it. Plan on a couple of days and check the tube.

What people love

  • Colors made to match Polyblend grout
  • Sanded texture blends into grout lines
  • Water cleanup

Common gripes

  • Less flexible than silicone, so it can crack in moving joints
  • Sand makes it a little harder to tool smooth
  • Needs patience before water exposure

Solvent-based elastomer

Sashco Lexel

Clear elastomeric sealant

4.0 out of 5

The clear caulk pros keep in the truck. It sticks to things other caulks slide off.

Best for
Clear seals on glass, metal, many plastics, wood, and fixtures, inside or out.
Skip it if
You can't ventilate well, or the gap is wide and deep (it shrinks a little as it dries).
Paintable?
Sashco lists it as paintable
Wet areas?
Yes, once cured
Where
Interior and exterior
Cleanup
Mineral spirits while wet
Timing
Skins fast but can look cloudy for days before it turns fully clear. Check the tube for water exposure.

What people love

  • About as clear as caulk gets
  • Bonds to a long list of surfaces, including many plastics
  • Very flexible

Common gripes

  • Strong solvent smell while it cures
  • Stringy and tricky to tool
  • Cloudy until fully cured, which alarms people

Siding, windows & concrete

Exterior joints that bake, freeze, and move all year.

Advanced exterior latex

DAP Dynaflex Ultra

Advanced exterior sealant

4.5 out of 5

Exterior latex done right: flexible and paintable, and it still cleans up with water.

Best for
Exterior trim, siding, window and door perimeters you want to paint and not redo next spring.
Skip it if
The joint is submerged, horizontal concrete, or up on the roof.
Paintable?
Yes
Wet areas?
Rain, once it's set
Where
Exterior and interior
Cleanup
Water, while it's wet
Timing
DAP advertises quick rain resistance and paint times. Full cure still takes days; check the tube.

What people love

  • Water cleanup with exterior-grade flexibility
  • Paints well
  • Holds up to weather far better than basic latex

Common gripes

  • Costs more than builder-grade latex
  • Weather window still matters: no rain or cold snaps right after
  • Not for wet interior zones

Elastomeric acrylic latex

Sashco Big Stretch

High-stretch acrylic latex

4.5 out of 5

The fix for the crack that keeps coming back.

Best for
Joints that move: siding and trim, log and wood homes, ceiling-to-wall cracks that reopen every winter.
Skip it if
The joint sits under constant water, or it's a floor or walking surface.
Paintable?
Yes
Wet areas?
Weather, not immersion
Where
Interior and exterior
Cleanup
Water, while it's wet
Timing
Slower than basic latex, and cool, damp weather slows it more. Check the tube for rain and paint times.

What people love

  • Famously stretchy and forgiving
  • Stays flexible for years
  • Paintable, low odor, water cleanup

Common gripes

  • Takes its time to cure and can feel tacky for a while
  • Harder to tool crisp than stiffer caulks
  • Needs dry weather to get going

MS polymer / hybrid

Soudal Fix ALL

Hybrid sealant and adhesive

4.5 out of 5

The modern all-rounder: one tube for wood, metal, masonry, and most plastics.

Best for
Mixed-material seams inside or out, damp surfaces, jobs where you'd rather not choose between paintable and waterproof.
Skip it if
The plastic is polyethylene, polypropylene, or PTFE (hardly anything sticks to those), or the joint stays underwater permanently.
Paintable?
Yes; test oil-based paints
Wet areas?
Yes
Where
Interior and exterior
Cleanup
Before it cures, with a solvent wipe or the maker's cleaning wipes
Timing
Skins in minutes and cures from the outside in, a few millimeters a day. Deep joints take longer.

Common gripes

  • Pricier than traditional caulk
  • Availability varies by region and store

Polyurethane

Sikaflex-1a

Polyurethane joint sealant

4.5 out of 5

Concrete's best friend on vertical joints. Tough, pro-grade, and built to move.

Best for
Vertical concrete and masonry joints, foundation-to-siding gaps, precast, and window perimeters in masonry.
Skip it if
The joint is horizontal and needs to flow flat (use the self-leveling version), or it's glass or a tub.
Paintable?
Yes, after cure
Wet areas?
Yes
Where
Exterior and interior
Cleanup
Mineral spirits before it cures; cured sealant must be cut out
Timing
Tack-free within hours, but it cures from the outside in, so deep joints take days.

What people love

  • Very strong grip on concrete and masonry
  • Tough, durable, and flexible
  • Rated to ASTM C920 for joint movement

Common gripes

  • Sticky mess if you're sloppy
  • Stiff to gun when it's cold; a high-thrust gun helps
  • Needs backer rod and clean, dry joints to perform

Self-leveling polyurethane

Sikaflex Self-Leveling

Self-leveling polyurethane sealant for flat joints

4.5 out of 5

Pour it, leave it, don't touch it. It levels itself into a flat, tough joint.

Best for
Horizontal concrete: driveway and sidewalk joints, patios, garage floor control joints.
Skip it if
The joint is vertical or sloped (it will run right out).
Paintable?
Usually left unpainted
Wet areas?
Yes, once cured
Where
Exterior and garage floors
Cleanup
Mineral spirits before it cures
Timing
Needs dry weather and no traffic while it cures. Check the tube for foot and vehicle times.

What people love

  • Flows in and flattens itself
  • Handles foot and car traffic
  • Flexible enough for slab movement

Common gripes

  • Disappears into cracks without backer rod
  • Runs on any slope
  • Weather and temperature window is strict

Roofs, gutters & specialists

Up on the ladder, down in the basement, and inside the walls.

Solvent-based elastomer

Sashco Through the Roof!

Roofing and repair sealant

4.0 out of 5

The emergency tube for the ladder bag. Clear, flexible, and stubborn about sticking.

Best for
Roof leaks, flashing, vent boots, skylights, gutters, and seams you want to disappear.
Skip it if
The job is indoors or cosmetic.
Paintable?
Sashco lists it as paintable
Wet areas?
Sashco says it can go on wet surfaces
Where
Exterior

Mineral spirits while wet
Timing
Cure depends on bead size and weather. Check the tube; dry, clean surfaces still bond best.

What people love

  • Sticks in lousy conditions
  • Clear, so repairs don't scream
  • Stays flexible through heat and cold

Common gripes

  • Strong smell
  • Stringy and messy on the ladder
  • Easy to overapply

Tripolymer

Geocel 2300 Tripolymer

Construction tripolymer sealant

4.5 out of 5

The gutter pro's secret weapon. It grabs metal and weathered surfaces that defeat latex.

Best for
Gutter seams and end caps, metal roofing and flashing, siding, and dirty or weathered joints.
Skip it if
The bead will be seen up close indoors, or you hate solvent smells.
Paintable?
Yes

Skip it if
You want a neat, visible finish, or the job is indoors.
Paintable?

  • Slow to cure and can pick up dirt

Hydraulic cement

Quikrete Hydraulic Water-Stop Cement

Fast-setting patching cement

4.0 out of 5

An emergency responder, not a joint sealant. It stops the trickle today.

Best for
Plugging active leaks in concrete and block walls, floor-wall joints, and around pipe penetrations.
Skip it if
The crack moves, or the leak comes from a drainage problem you haven't fixed.
Paintable?
Can be coated with masonry waterproofer
Wet areas?
Sets even with water present, per the maker
Where
Basements and masonry
Cleanup
Water, before it sets
Timing
Sets in minutes. Mix only what you can place right away.

What people love

  • Stops seeping water fast
  • Cheap and easy to find
  • Works where no caulk would stick

Common gripes

  • Treats the symptom, not the drainage

Acoustic / non-hardening

OSI SC-175 Acoustical

Acoustical sound sealant (non-hardening latex)

4.0 out of 5

Invisible, and that's the point. It seals the air gaps sound sneaks through.

Best for
Drywall perimeters, top and bottom plates, electrical boxes, and seams in soundproofed walls and ceilings.
Skip it if
You need a finished, exposed bead, or the area gets wet.
Paintable?
Meant to be hidden; test before painting

  • Not a finish caulk
